Local Mountain Bike Trails

  • Old Robertson Road
      • Location: Start from McGregor, finish at Stone River.
      • Trail Options: Out and back, as far as you like, a 17km circular route, a 28km circular route.
      • Terrain: Quiet dirt road through working farmland, return on Robertson tarmac. Or just do a there and back again on the dirt road!
      • Permits: None
  • Rhebokskraal Loop
    • Location: Start from McGregor, finish at Stone River.
    • Trail Options: 8km.
    • Terrain: Dirt farm road through a drift, cycling between the vines and back into the village via the Stormsvlei road.
    • Permits: None
  • Strykhoogte Pass
    • Location: Start from McGregor, finish at Stone River.
    • Trail Options: 24km
    • Terrain: Dirt road along the Stormsvlei Road, up over the Strykhoogte Pass and back into the village via the Robertson road. Quite strenuous.
    • Permits: None
    • Boesmansrivier Bridge
      • Location: Start from McGregor, finish at Stone River.
      • Trail Options: Out and back, as far as you like, 23km each way for the full trip
      • Terrain: Quiet dirt road through working farmland.
      • Permits: None
    • Boesmanskloof & die Galg
      • Location: Start from McGregor, finish at Stone River.
      • Trail Options: Out and back, as far as you like, 15.7km each way. Stop at Lords for a drink and meal!
      • Terrain: Quiet dirt road through working farmland.
      • Permits: None
  • Steenboksvlakte MTB Trails (Map Link)
    • Location: Steenboksvlakte Farm (approx. 14km outside McGregor village)
    • Trail Options: Two main 8km technical loops — "Two Gannas Trail" and "Adder Trail".
    • Terrain: Rugged, technical Karoo single-track with short steep climbs, rock bridges, and technical descents.
    • Permits: Prior permission/arrangements required via local trail management in McGregor.
  • Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve MTB Route (Map Link)
    • Location: Langverwagten Road, McGregor
    • Trail Options: 8km circular trail (can be extended to a 15km loop).
    • Terrain: Low-lying gravel tracks, jeep tracks, and dry riverbed crossings winding through dwarf Karoo scrub and bird dams.
    • Permits: Entry fee/day permit payable at the CapeNature Vrolijkheid gatehouse.
  • Java MTB Trails (Van Loveren) (Map Link)
    • Location: Van Loveren Family Vineyards, R317, Robertson
    • Trail Options: 4 color-coded routes — Yellow (12km easy), Red (20km moderate), Blue (31km intermediate), and Black (35km with 720m elevation gain).
    • Terrain: Vineyard tracks, riverbank single-track, and technical climbs up the Elandsberg slopes.
    • Permits: Available at the Van Loveren tasting room (day permits and bike rentals available).
  • Pat Busch Mountain Reserve Trails (Map Link)
    • Location: Bergendal Farm, Klaasvoogds West, Robertson
    • Trail Options: Network of private farm single-tracks and jeep tracks connecting to the Klaasvoogds Meander.
    • Terrain: Mountain fynbos single-track, pine forest sections, and steep valley climbs.
    • Permits: Day passes available by prior arrangement or free for overnight guests.

Annual Regional MTB & Gravel Events

  • Run & Ride McGregor (Dirty South Events) (Map Link)
    • Event Base: Village Square / Jimmy's Pub, McGregor
    • Format: Annual 2-day gravel cycling and mountain biking stage race held late August / early September.
    • Distances: Long Route (~140km over 2 days) and Short Route (~100km over 2 days).
    • Highlights: CSA-sanctioned event taking riders across private farmland, mountain passes, and quiet gravel roads throughout the Breede River Valley.
  • Java MTB Challenge (Map Link)
    • Event Base: Van Loveren Family Vineyards, Robertson
    • Format: Popular annual spring spring mass-participation MTB event.
    • Distances: Ranging from a 10km fun ride to 20km, 35km, and 85km marathon options.
    • Highlights: Crosses over 25 private wine estates, featuring farm bridges, canal single-tracks, and mountain climbing sections.
